How did the idea of Active Launceston come about?
A very successful public meeting was held by the University of Tasmania and the Launceston City Council in June 2007. Following this, a working group was established to apply for an Active Australia Community and Schools Grant, from the Federal Government. This working group established the framework and direction for the Active Launceston project.
The project was initiated as an 18 month pilot (commencing June 2008), however due to its success, has now received ongoing funding for a period of three years 01/12/09 – 30/11/12
What is the main focus of Active Launceston?
The goal of Active Launceston is to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Launceston through increased participation in physical activity. The project has 3 objectives which are centered on improving communication and coordination of the industry, providing more opportunities to be physically active; both value adding to existing opportunities and introducing new initiatives and finally developing resources that support and monitor an increased participation in physical activity.
Who is running Active Launceston, and who else is involved?
The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is the lead agency. Funding has been provided by UTAS, Sport and Recreation Tasmania (through the Community Recreation Grants program), Launceston City Council and the Tasmanian Community Fund (TCF).
The Examiner Newspaper and Southern Cross Television are the projects promotional partners.
Representation from The Department of Education, Women’s Health North (DHHS), Launceston Chamber of Commerce, Fit ‘n’ Kicking, and General Practise North along with representatives from Numerous UTAS faculties and schools form the Project Working Group.
The Trim and Fitness International Sport for All Association (TAFISA) provides support on a global level through an International Partnership.
